SAICM is the chemical agency of WHO. In 2010, International Society of Doctors for the Environment (ISDE) nominated Environmental Persistent Pharmaceutical Pollutants (EPPP) as emerging issue.
The first meeting of the Open-ended Working Group (OEWG) took place in Belgrade, Serbia, from 15 to 18 November 2011. Technical briefing was on 14 November 2011. Here the problem of EPPPs was presented by ISDEs representatives Lilian Corra, Argentina and Åke Wennmalm, Sweden.
Formal decision about including EPPPs as an emerging issue would have been taken at the third session of the International Conference on Chemicals Management (ICCM3) in Nairobi, September, 2012. However, OWEG decided not to adopt EPPPs, although it was recognized as an emerging issue. The recommendations have to be reworked, and then a new proposal can be made.
Swedish Doctors for the Environment (LfM), a member organisation of ISDE, has been active in developing the material for ISDE. All material will be found here.
Meeting documents from OWEG 1 cand be found at SAICMs website.
